PRACTISE TIPS

Alright guys so to get the most out of Guitar UnCAGED, you are going to need to practise….But that’s cool right?  Because practising means playing the guitar and that’s what we’re here to do.

In fact it’s only through practise that you’ll get any better at all, see practise as the path to your goal of getting good, so embrace it, it’s fun!

But what does that mean and how do you do it?  Here’s some tips..

Organise your practise time properly, its pretty obvious that the more you practise the better you’ll get, but if you aren’t organised with your practise, no amount of time with your guitar will help you get better!

Know when you are going to start and finish practising, this stops you getting bored and means you can organise yourself and your practise.

If you are only able to do short practise sessions then have a goal for the end of the session, so say things like, ‘in the next half an hour I am going to learn 3 positions of the major scale’ Then do it!  If you are able to do slightly longer then split your time up, try doing a third of your time on exercises and scales, then a third jamming with the UnCAGED backing tracks and the final third going over some theory stuff or working out a song.

Practise with a metronome!  BEEP beep beep beep BEEP beep beep beep….  It’s the world’s most annoying noise until you actually come to play along with it, then it kind of disappears hopefully holding you in time.  This is by far the best advice I can give you, because it’s really easy to see the difference between players who practise with a metronome and those who don’t!  Also note how fast you can play exercises and try and push the limits so you can track progress.  Don’t forget to then give it a go real slow too…

Record yourself!  Record yourself playing along with the UnCAGED backing tracks, how does it sound?  Are you in time?   Are you underplaying, overplaying, using the same licks again and again?

Reward yourself!  At the end of each session turn on your favourite backing track and have a play along, or sling your guitar low, run around the room jump on things and have a play along with a favourite song, it’s supposed to be fun after all!

Enjoy!
